Androgynous Fashion Style: Blending Gender Boundaries

Androgynous Fashion Style: Blending Gender Boundaries

The actual term Androgynous comes from the Latin word ‘androgyne’ used to describe a union of male and female essences.  True androgynous fashion style is used to express non-binary gender, which means that this style is neither feminine nor masculine.

Females wearing elements from the masculine closet have become normalized and this is not considered androgynous as such. Today, a complete adaptation of masculine clothing by women is considered androgynous. However, you can create this fashion by blending traditional male and female fashion elements in one outfit with your unique style.

A pantsuit (a woman's suit of clothing consisting of pants and a matching or coordinating coat or jacket) is the main component of this fashion style and was introduced in the 1920s. Marlene Dietrich undoubtedly made a real revolution in combining women's costumes with men's suits. This has been a component of a provocative stage image and an instrument of rebellion.

Main Components:

Along with pantsuits, tailored straight cut trousers, shirts, blazers, belts, smart loafers, oxfords, and sleek neckties -often with black, white, gray, and brown colours, sometimes with stripes- are the staples of this fashion style.

Even though the overall look is men's fashion inspired, you may find some little elements of women’s touch, such as earrings, necklaces, clutches, heels, and such.
