Dark Winter (Deep Winter) Color Palette

Dark Winter Color Palette

Undertone

Dark Winter, also known as Deep Winter, is the richest and most intense palette within the Winter season. Defined by cool undertones, deep saturation, and bold contrast, this season reflects the dramatic beauty of long winter nights, deep shadows, and rich, jewel-like tones.

Contrast

Dark Winters have high contrast between their skin, hair, and eyes, but the contrast often feels deeper and more grounded compared to the sharp, icy contrast of True Winter. Their features are bold, defined, and naturally dramatic, with darker hair, vivid eyes, and skin that ranges from fair to deep. Whether your complexion is light or dark, there is always strong contrast between your features, creating a rich, captivating appearance.

Dark Winter combines the coolness of Winter with subtle depth inherited from Autumn, giving this season richness, intensity, and mystery without any warmth. The overall look is deep, bold, and sophisticated. Regardless of the skin color, their bright skin and the whites of their eyes create a high contrast with their dark color hair and eyes.

Skin

Dark Winter skin ranges from fair to deep, with cool, neutral-cool, or sometimes neutral undertones. The complexion may appear smooth and clear, often with tones like porcelain, cool beige, olive, medium taupe, rich brown, or espresso. Freckles may appear, but they typically have a cool or neutral tone rather than warm.

According to the classic metal test, Silver is the most flattering for Dark Winters, enhancing the cool, deep quality of the skin. Some Dark Winters with neutral undertones can also wear cool, antique gold as long as it's muted and not overly warm or brassy.

Eyes

Dark Winter eyes are bold, deep, and captivating, often appearing as the darkest or most intense feature. Typical eye colors include dark brown, cool hazel, deep green, or black-brown, sometimes with flecks of cool grey or a subtle jewel-like clarity. The whites of the eyes are crisp, adding contrast and definition to the gaze. For detailed eye pattern analysis click here.

Hair

Dark Winter hair is naturally dark, cool, and rich in tone. Hair colors typically range from medium brown to black, with cool, ashy, or neutral undertones. Some Dark Winters may have dark brown hair with a soft, cool sheen, while others have almost-black hair that enhances the season's depth and contrast. There are no golden or reddish tones present — the hair's richness always remains cool and deep.

Dark Winter / True Winter / Bright Winter

Dark Winter sits between True Winter and Dark Autumn on the seasonal flow chart. Dark Winter colours are the darkest and least cool in the Winter family. They are also less saturated and less bright than other Winter seasons.

Neighbouring the Dark Autumn, according to flow theory, makes the Dark Winter palette warmer and softer than other Winters.

Dark Winter Season Comparison

Dark Winters and Dark Autumns have dark colouring and high contrast in their features, but Dark Autumns have muted appearance compared to Dark Winter’s brilliance.

Dark Winters have cool (blue, gray) undertones, whereas Dark Autumns have warm (golden, yellow) undertones. Also, Dark Winter's contrast level is higher than Dark Autumn’s.

Dark (Deep) Winter Color Combinations

Technically you can create colour combinations by mixing and matching colors in your color palette. You can combine your accent colours with your basic colours or dark or light neutral colors.

Dark Winter Color Combinations

Your color palette encompasses a range of dark, cool neutrals, and somewhat vibrant tones.

Similar to other winter seasons, Dark Winter features a high level of contrast. This can be achieved by combining dark or light neutrals with accent colors of the opposite value, such as pairing dark gray with light pink. However, it's advisable to refrain from incorporating too many accent colors into your combinations.

Complementary or analogous combinations are well-suited for your palette. Ensure that one of these colors is your neutral tone. These combinations offer a high level of contrast without overwhelming your look.

You can also create contrast by pairing dark and light colors, such as black with light hues or white with darker colors from your palette. While full black and white ensembles or monochromatic combinations entirely in light or dark colors may not be the most flattering options for you, your palette provides a range of choices to maintain a stylish and harmonious appearance.

Patterns & Prints

Patters should contain only Dark winter colors and have high contrast; they should not blend. Avoid light and too bright colors or floral patterns; choose abstract, geometric, and stylish patterns. Medium to big-scale patterns and prints will work better.

Dark Winters look best in fabrics that reflect the depth, richness, and bold contrast of their palette. Choose structured materials or luxurious textures with a subtle sheen or smooth finish to complement your naturally intense features. Ideal fabrics include velvet, satin, fine wool, silk blends, cashmere, and structured cotton blends. Deep jewel tones, monochrome combinations, and bold, high-contrast prints work beautifully for this season.

Avoid light, overly soft, or warm fabrics, as they can wash out your natural depth. Instead, choose bold, cool, and rich materials that emphasize your striking, dramatic appearance.

Metals: For Dark Winter color palettes, cooler metals like silver and white gold are most flattering, though deeper, less yellow shades of gold can also be suitable. Both shiny and matte finishes work well, allowing for versatility in achieving either a polished or casual look. •

Gemstones: Ruby, with its vibrant hue, is an ideal choice for Dark Winter. Other excellent gemstones include sapphire, with its deep and cool tones, emerald, garnet, rhodolite, lapis lazuli and black onyx. These stones complement the rich and deep color combinations typical of the Dark Winter palette.

Dark (Deep) Winter Make-up Colors

Foundation & Concealer

Your skin tone is neutral-cool. Skin color matching, matte, smooth and pink-based foundations, and concealers are best for you. Avoid too yellow-based foundations; they will conflict with your cool skin complexion.

Dark Winter Foundation Colors

Blush

You can choose dark or light blush colors according to your skin tone. Lighter skin complexions can use pinkish alternatives, while darker ones can use mulberry and plum tones.

Dark Winter Blush Colors

Lipstick

Dark Winter Lipstick Colors

Dark Winters can use dark and intense colors freely, which would look best on them. Lipstick is your main make-up element since it will mirror your bright eyes and deep texture. Lightweight eye makeup with dark lipsticks will look very natural on you.

Eye shadows

Dark Winter Eye Shadow Colors

We recommend medium-tone cool shades from your palette. Especially, greens, purple and plum would be gorgeous with your brown color eyes. Opt for slightly shimmery combinations.

Eyeliner & Mascara

Dark Winter Eyeliner Colors

We recommend darker tones for eyeliners as well. You have many options other than black, like dark navy, dark chocolate, or dark purple tones. Black tones are better options for mascara.

Best Fragrances for Winter Season

Every Season has its own iconic notes and scents

Rich, bold, gourmand fragrances, oriental scents and exotic notes are best for Winters, such as amber, cinnamon, musk, caramel, vanilla, pomegranate, honey, tonka bean and black pepper. Some woody notes such as cedar, sandalwood, cardamom and patchouli with a black rose and vanilla mix are also their best choices.
